At Abby Dental Care, we place white composite fillings, given that they are the most natural looking and bio-compatible material available.
In the past, fillings were typically placed with a silver coloured amalgam. Nowadays, most patients elect to have white fillings over the amalgam for the natural appearance it offers. Amalgam fillings are made from multiple alloys, such as mercury, silver, tin and copper, whereas composite fillings are made from a mixture of glass or quartz filler in a resin.
Why composite over amalgam? Well aside from aesthetics and wearing nicely against opposing teeth, composite creates a better seal around your tissue. With composite material, the least amount of tooth structure needs to be cut away to place the filling, making it a great choice when it comes to a preventative approach for conserving tooth structure.
Fillings are placed when there is decay present within the tooth that is not significant enough to require a crown.
Composite fillings are also ideal when a small amount of tooth structure is damaged or broken, when an area of tooth has been ground down, or worn away from clenching and grinding, causing an area of the tooth to erode.
Commonly, a white composite filling will not take more than 45 minutes to place. If there are more fillings to do in the same area, we often suggest having all treatments done together to minimize the number of appointments you require, as your comfort and convenience is always our top priority.
Your home care routine is very important when it comes to reducing your chances for decay. Flossing needs to be a priority if you want to reduce chances for decay as your toothbrush cannot get in between your teeth where food and bacteria get stuck.
Our amazing clinical team will offer you educational information, tips, and tricks to keep your smile its healthiest. By having an optimal oral hygiene home care routine, and seeing your hygienist every 6-9 months, will help you reduce the number of cavities you get.
At Abby Dental Care, we also carry professional products available to our patients for purchase that help reduce the bacterial infection that causes cavities, such as: Sonicare toothbrushes, air flossers, MI paste, dry-mouth gel, Xylitol mints & gum, and as always we recommend topical Fluoride treatments and using a fluoridated toothpaste at home. (topical fluoride treatment recommendation: adults 1x year and children 2x a year)
