How do braces work? Essentially braces work by applying continuous pressure over a period of time to slowly move teeth in a specific direction. As the teeth move, the bone changes shape as pressure is applied. The type of braces used and duration of treatment will depend on each individual.
Conventional braces are made up of small brackets that are bonded directly to the front of each tooth, the brackets act like handles, holding the arch wires that move the teeth. The teeth move when the arch wire puts pressure on the brackets and teeth. Sometimes, springs or rubber bands are used exert more force in a specific direction.
